Welcome

A first dispatch — what this place is for, and why we're lighting the lamp at dusk.

I'm not sure what to call this. Blog feels too small. Publication feels too grand. Field notes is closer — that's what it'll mostly be. Notes from a man trying to think honestly about faith and doubt and the strange, half-lit business of being a person in 2026.

The name comes from vespers — evening prayers, the hour just before night. Vesperal beings is what we are: creatures of dusk, neither fully in the light nor fully in the dark, mostly muddling through. I find I do my best thinking in that hour. I suspect a lot of you do too.

Here's what to expect. Some essays will be theological. Some will be cultural. Some will be about traffic, or grocery stores, or whatever I noticed on the way home. They'll all be honest — or as honest as I can manage on any given Tuesday. They'll all assume you're smart, busy, and tired of being shouted at. They'll mostly be written for the version of you that sits down with a cup of something warm, not the version of you scrolling at a stoplight.

Light a lamp. Stay a while.
